I have an 2003 e39 530i. It came with a set of snow tires, but no extra rims. I found a set of e46 rims for a really good price, but I’m not sure if they’ll fit on the car. I read something about needing a spacer, but I’m not sure exactly what.

Do you have a picture or know the style of the wheels?

Ugh. e39 have a very unusual hub bore, a wheel from almost any other BMW will definitely require a spacer, and then you need to calculate the effect on offset, etc.

Go to the e39 forums at http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/ and start searching. I think there is a table of wheel size/offset etc guidlines for all BMW models available, you will need to find your model, the model the wheels came from, and then figure the spacer needed.

It’s a huge pain. Much easier to limit your search to used e39 wheels.

No, they will not fit (I’ve owned 2x E39s.)

The center hub on the E39 is larger than on the E46 and other BMWs. It’s 74.10mm for the E39 and 72.6mm for the E46. Without a spacer (essentially a simple plug-in ring that goes around the hub) your wheels will wobble like crazy. Any simple machine shop or wheel shop should be able to machine a ring for you easily.

If the e46 wheels have a smaller centerbore, wouldn’t you need to machine out the centerbore to fit the hub? Rings wouldn’t work since you’re trying to open up the wheel, not make the hub larger.

D’oh. I got it backwards.

Yes and no; if you re-read I got my math backwards. You’d need the ring to fit the “larger bore” E39 rims on an E46. To fit the E46 rims (which have a smaller hub bore) on the E39 you’d need to machine out the center a tad.

As other have explained, nothing BMW OEM will fit out of the box if it’s not from an E39. With one exception; my wheel site suggests BMW X6 (2008-14) front wheels will fit without adjustment. I’m a bit skeptical though, due to width.
